Hey SHEFIT Sisters!
We have a decadent and delicious dessert on this week’s episode of CHEFIT. But here’s the catch, we’re making a chocolate mousse without all of the added fat and sugar. Plus, it still tastes amazing (and looks adorable).
This week, we’re swapping out the traditional chocolate mousse made with heavy cream, for protein-packed Greek yogurt “faux” mousse. The Greek yogurt is just as creamy as heavy whipping cream, but it’s far more health conscious with less saturated fat and total calories. I personally love it when my favorite desserts get nutritious makeovers and still taste amazing.
Switching from milk chocolate to dark chocolate also helps to cut back on sugar. Plus, you double up on antioxidants because dark chocolate contains far more pure cocoa than milk chocolate. The antioxidants, especially in dark chocolate, help fight off potential diseases in the body and they’re most well-known for their heart healthy benefits.
These mousse cups are perfect for any occasion and the kids will love them too!
Decadent Dark Chocolate Faux Mousse
Yields 4 servings (approximately 1/3 cup)
Ingredients:
1 cup plain 2% Greek yogurt
2 ½ teaspoons sugar
2 teaspoons milk
½ teaspoon vanilla
4 ounces 70% dark chocolate
¼ cup whipped topping
Preparation:First, prepare a double boiler by bringing a pot of water to a simmer on the stove. Set a heat proof bowl on top of the simmering water and place chocolate in the bowl. Stir chocolate frequently to encourage even melting. Once chocolate has melted, remove from heat and set aside.
With an electric mixer, beat Greek yogurt until fluffy, approximately 2 minutes. Add milk, sugar, and vanilla and whip for one more minute.
Now, begin to slowly add melted chocolate, beating well after each addition. Once all chocolate has been incorporated, divide between four containers and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes prior to serving. If desired, serve with whipped topping and chocolate shavings.
Recipe tip: Always choose at least 70% dark chocolate. The higher this percentage, the more antioxidants your chocolate bar contains.
