Music is a powerful tool used by athletes every day. It's a way to get in the zone before a race, it cheers us on when we feel fatigue creep in, and it motivates us with strong, powerful lyrics. And we aren't alone in these conclusions: "According to Running USA’s 2017 report, 55% of 7,000 runners surveyed listen to music during their miles."  In one study, music was able to activate the prefrontal cortex area, minimize perceptions, improve performance, and accelerate recovery during 5 km of running.

We'll be honest - - sometimes running can get boring. The same paths, old neighborhoods, familiar scenery.  Try mixing it up by changing your music! Research discovered a direct correlation between fast-paced music and athletic performance. So keeping your tunes to 120-140 beats per minute is ideal. 

"Generally speaking, there is a science to choosing an effective exercise soundtrack," said Dr. Costas Karageorghis, an associate professor of sports psychology.
