Reclaiming Strength: Marisa’s Journey Through Cancer, Recovery, and Rediscovery

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honored to highlight Marisa Stachelski, a BRCA2 diagnosis and double mastectomy survivor whose story is one of courage, resilience, and reclaiming strength.

A Life-Changing Diagnosis

In December 2022, Marisa’s life was turned upside down when a routine colonoscopy, done to explore lingering GI issues, revealed colon cancer. Further testing uncovered another life-altering truth: she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation, significantly increasing her risk for breast and ovarian cancers.

“At the time, as a 37-year-old mom of two young boys and someone who’s always prioritized health and fitness, this diagnosis was a devastating blow,” she shares. “But it also sparked a powerful journey of prevention and purpose.”

Determined to take control of her health and future, Marisa made the brave choice to undergo a preventative double mastectomy with tissue expanders in November 2023, followed by reconstruction with implants in February 2024.

Returning to Movement and Confidence

Throughout recovery, Marisa’s biggest question was one so many women share after surgery: How do I safely return to the active lifestyle that defines me?

“I tried countless sports bras, but nothing gave me the support or the confidence I was craving,” she explains. “Until I found SHEFIT.”

The Ultimate Sports Bra® became a turning point in her healing. “For the first time post-surgery, I felt supported, both physically and emotionally. I could run again. I could lift again. I could reclaim the strength that my diagnosis tried to take from me.”

Since then, Marisa has added even more SHEFIT pieces to her collection and often recommends them to women navigating similar journeys. “I love introducing my community, especially other women facing mastectomies, BRCA diagnoses, and post-op recovery, to brands they can trust.”

Giving Back and Paying It Forward

Marisa’s journey didn’t stop at healing; it evolved into advocacy. On June 25th, she hosted a Breast Cancer Fashion Show Fundraiser, with 100% of proceeds benefiting The Dubin Breast Center of Mount Sinai.

SHEFIT was honored to be part of her event, supporting Marisa as she turned her story of survival into one of impact and empowerment. Her ability to transform hardship into hope embodies the very essence of SHEFIT strength.

Surgeon-Approved Support

“SHEFIT’s patented adjustability provides maximum support, even for recent post-op patients, with increased mobility and comfort,” says Dr. Bengtson, board-certified plastic surgeon.

The Ultimate Sports Bra® was designed for women like Marisa, those redefining strength and reclaiming confidence through every phase of life.

A Journey of Prevention and Purpose

Now 39, cancer-free, and thriving as a mom of two, Marisa continues to inspire others through her openness and advocacy. Her story is a reminder that healing isn’t just physical; it’s emotional, empowering, and deeply personal.

“This journey taught me that strength doesn’t come from never falling; it comes from finding the courage to rise again,” Marisa says.

This month and every month, SHEFIT stands beside survivors, fighters, and all women taking charge of their health.
